Celler Cataruz, Extremo, Valencia, Spain, 2020

£23.00

50% Verdejo / 50% Viognier - 13% abv.

This wine took all my senses on a rollercoaster ride; elderflower, eucalyptus, kaffir lime, vanilla…Such complexity and depth of flavour were surprising from the floral and aromatic grapes in the blend. It boasts an intense yellow colour and has leesy notes, with a finish reminiscent of an off-dry Riesling. Hand-harvested from 35 yrs old vines, this wine is rich, and clearly enriched, by its environment. Our current Winemaker to Watch, Coqué Ruz is blowing up Spain with her exceptional ability to understand native varietals in their natural environment and continue to produce exceptional wines.

Coqué Ruz is a self-described city girl with no family winemaking tradition but with a love of wine inherited from her father. After 15 years of experience as a sommelier and winemaker for other Valencian wineries, she decided to start her own project in 2009, launching Celler Cataruz, with guidance from Diego Fernández-Pons, her former oenologist at Venta del Moro. She focuses on expressing indigenous and international grape varieties grown on two different terroirs, the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The white wines are made from grapes grown in the south of Valencia. A Mediterranean climate that ripens the grapes, but a land that was submerged in the sea centuries ago, and as such keeps the salinity between its corners. The reds, whose varieties are grown in the north of Valencia at an altitude of 800 metres above sea level, in Utiel, reflect a marked Atlantic climate. Thanks to the rain and the wind that comes from La Mancha, they have a markedly northern character.

Vinification: Cold maceration. Low-temperature fermentation. Destemmed grapes. Low filtration and clarification. Ageing: four months on lees in French Oak.
